Dos Pueblos High School experienced a power outage from 9 a.m. until the first 20 minutes of fourth period on Monday, disrupting internet access and classroom activities across campus.
The outage impacted the majority of the campus, except the A-wing, P-wing, and C-wing, which run on a different power supply. According to Southern California Edison Media Relations Advisor David Eisenhauer, 30 other customers in the area around campus were also affected.
Traffic lights at the intersection of Glen Annie Road and Cathedral Oaks Road were also out until around 2 p.m. Four stop signs were placed at the site during the outage.
In a ParentSquare alert sent out to families, Principal Bill Woodard said the power outage was part of a planned construction project.
“This was … a planned outage to perform pole upgrades,” Woodard said.
Eisenhauer said that DPHS “was notified in advance” in accordance with SCE policy. However, Woodard stated in the ParentSquare alert that DPHS received no notification before the power was cut.
The power outage also took down internet access across most of the campus. This impacted lesson plans, as students were unable to use iPads or access Canvas. The lack of light in classrooms also played a role, although Woodard said that most classrooms had enough daylight to continue instruction.
“We have good plans in place for events such as today,” Woodard said.
English teacher Anna Guerrero said that the power outage had a relatively minor effect on her classes, as she had already switched her students to paper assignments. She stated that this made the power outage “easier,” although she had to “pivot a bit” and use the whiteboard for review instead of her classroom’s TV.
“Overall, [it was] surprisingly not bad, except my computer died,” Guerrero said.
Guerrero added that advance notice for a power outage would be “ideal” for teachers to adjust their lesson plans.
“If you don’t have stuff printed and already ready to go, it can definitely make your job as a teacher really difficult,” Guerrero said.
