A group of Dos Pueblos High School teachers put on their own “Airbands” performance in Scott Guttentag Greek Theatre during lunch on Friday, May 29. The performance was a part of the leadership class’ annual “Airbands” performance and was organized due to Guttentag having put in a “special request,” according to DPHS math teacher Gina Pearce.
“Scotty, when we were planning [pep rallies]was like, ‘Hey, I have one last request for you. I want to bring the teacher’s airbands back,’” Pearce said. “And I was like, ‘Are you kidding me right now?’ So, I’m doing this.”

The teacher’s “Airbands” performance included dances to “Watch Me (Whip / Nae Nae)” by Silentó, “Wobble” by V.I.C, and “Cha Cha Slide” by DJ Casper. “Cha Cha Slide” included live vocals from Guttentag.
“The teacher’s ‘Airbands’ performance was really good,” Ty Perkins (12) said. “I thought they did amazing. They really dropped the energy, especially for Scott’s last year. I feel like Scott was really happy seeing the teachers participate in the ‘Airbands’ like that.”
Although in recent years DPHS has only seen teachers perform briefly in pep rallies and in a short performance in last year’s “Airbands,” DPHS teachers used to put on yearly ‘Airbands’ performances.
“[Teacher’s ‘Airbands’] were super prevalent for like the first, I want to say like 10 to 15 years I was here,” Pearce said. “Then when [the teacher who would organize ‘Airbands’ ended up leaving, no one really kind of took over that role, so [‘Airbands’] kind of fell off at that point.”
Pearce organized this year’s teacher “Airbands” event, and teachers coordinated on which dance they would perform via YouTube videos. The first time teachers were able to get together and practice the dance was during the Leadership class’ run through on Thursday, the day before the official performance, according to Pearce.
“I feel like teachers have some type of magic when they drink coffee,” said Perkins, who was present during the run through. “Like the first run through it was bad. No dissing on any teachers but it was something. But the day of ‘Airbands,’ I saw them get out there, bring all the energy, get all hyped. Students were getting hyped too. It was pretty cool.”
At the end of the 2025-26 school year, Guttentag plans to retire. Pearce reflected on how that meant this year’s “Airbands” was the last one he would be part of.
“I’m happy to be able to give this to [Guttentag],” Pearce said. “This is one thing he loves, he’s Mr. DP Spirit, he really is. So I am just so happy that we’ve been able to put this together for him and do it in the Scotty G Greek.”
