Democratic politician, Dianne Feinstein, passed away on Sept. 29, 2023, at 90 years-old. Feinstein represented California in the senate and was the longest serving female senator in U.S. history.

Feinstein served as the mayor of San Francisco from 1978 to 1988, and was elected to serve in the U.S. senate in 1992.

The political achievements that she is responsible for include the Federal Assault Weapons Ban (1994), and the Lake Tahoe Restoration Act. The Federal Assault Weapons Ban prohibited assault weapons until it expired in 2004, and the Lake Tahoe Restoration Act authorized $300 million to be used for restoring the lake and the surrounding basin.

Sen. Laphonza Butler was appointed to finish out Feinstein’s term by Governor Gavin Newsom. She is serving as a junior senator and was sworn into office on Oct. 3, 2023.

Feinstein’s senate seat is up for re-election in November of 2024 and three democratic candidates have already announced that they are running for office. These candidates are Reps. Katie Porter, Adam Schiff, and Barbara Lee.
