The Virgil Elings Media Arts and Communication Center is the new media building. The media programs which take place in this building include journalism, yearbook, video production, computer science, photography, digital art, and DPNews.

Students and teachers have officially moved into the media building after three years of construction. While the construction of the building, which began fall of 2020, hasn’t officially ended, students and teachers are still able to use the facilities.

“The construction companies still come every day,” said John Dent, who heads yearbook and video production, and plays a large role in the design of the media building, “They are working on… [what’s] called a punch list of items.”

The building was originally set to open at the end of the summer of 2022. It was delayed due to a few problems, the main issue being how the building was to be powered as it had an outdated power system.

“They needed their own updated [power] system to support what’s happening in these two buildings,” Dent said. “Southern California Edison, the main power company in our area, had to get a new power transformer.”

The power transformer, ordered in April of 2021 was not delivered until December of 2022. The building officially had power in March of 2023, however construction of the building most likely won’t be officially done until next summer due to problems with a loud venting system.

“ [The construction crew is] going to have to come back and do three to four weeks worth of work without any students here,” Dent said. “Likely, that’s not going to be [un]til next summer…they’re going to have to replace ventilation in many of the rooms…and figure out how to deal with that loud venting system, which shouldn’t be like that.”
