At lunch on the lower field here at Dos Pueblos High School, a collection of frisbees flying overhead might catch the attention of students: they would have discovered the Ultimate Frisbee Club, a group that offers a different type of sport to its members.
Ultimate frisbee (shortened as Ultimate) is a non-contact sport played seven-on-seven on a football-esque field, including end zones. Players cannot run with the disc in their hands, requiring them to rely solely on passing to their teammates to score. Moreover, as a self-refereed sport, Ultimate emphasizes integrity and sportsmanship.

The Ultimate Frisbee Club was started in 2023 by former DPHS students Charlie Palmer, Rocky Thoman, and Nicole Barger, as well as other players on Santa Barbara’s competitive club Ultimate team from the Santa Barbara Youth Ultimate organization, to help grow the Ultimate scene on campus.
“I’m a sophomore at DP, and I started [ultimate club] pretty much as soon as I got here,” club member Gus Larson (10) said. “I had friends in the club before I went to DP, and it was a really fun experience—I came out, and I loved it.”
The club meets weekly and follows a loose schedule of frisbee-related activities.
“We meet Thursday at lunch, and the first few minutes we’re just chatting, throwing, warming up,” Larson said. “Then we usually play some sort of Frisbee-related game. It’s a great community, you have fun.”
The club also plays organized Ultimate games during club meetings, with many players joining Santa Barbara’s competitive team after having discovered the sport from DPHS’s Ultimate club.
Larson said his favorite part of this club is the friends and “connections” that he’s made, as well as the club’s community around campus.
For many members, Ultimate is their committed main sport, with some students looking ahead to playing Ultimate in college and beyond. Larson encourages everyone to give the Ultimate Frisbee Club a shot and take a chance on a sport that could become a great part of their lives.
“You don’t need anything to join,” Larson said. “We meet at the field below the stadium on Thursdays at lunch. It’s really fun, with great people. You should come out.”
