Former President Donald Trump has been found liable by a Manhattan jury for sexually abusing and defaming author and journalist E. Jean Carroll.

Writer’s note: The following article mentions rape and sexual abuse.

After just three hours of deliberation, a Manhattan jury unanimously found that Donald Trump sexually abused E. Jean Carroll in a Bergdorf Goodman department store dressing room during the 1990s. While the actual interaction occurred decades ago, Carroll took advantage of the “New York State Adult Survivor Act” to publicly reveal the truth. She made several claims following the event at the store, including that Trump raped her and called her a liar in hopes of stripping away her successful career. This lawsuit didn’t find Trump liable for rape; however, he has been ordered by the court to pay $5 million in reparation for the other two charges.

“THIS VERDICT IS A DISGRACE—A CONTINUATION OF THE GREATEST WITCH HUNT OF ALL TIME!” Trump said on Truth Social.

Trump has denied knowing Carroll at all on multiple occasions and claims that she filed the suit last November simply to get attention and gain popularity. Trump decided not to attend the court and sent in a 40-minute video instead. After the results of the lawsuit, he mocked Carroll in a CNN town hall. In the past, multiple women have claimed that Trump has sexually abused them. This makes Carroll’s case a significant breakthrough for women who have made such claims.

“She was a wack job,” Trump said.

Carroll is considering filing a third lawsuit against Trump for defamation following his vulgar speech.

“This is not about the money. This is about getting my name back,” she said.

Trump’s team has filed to appeal the verdict, as he believes the decision made by the judge is political. Trump’s attorney, Joe Tacopina, said that the trial was unfair. Carroll’s attorney, Roberta Kaplan, said that there isn’t sufficient evidence against the decision, meaning the appeal will most likely not result in Trump’s favor.

“I’ve rarely felt more confident about an appeal than I do about this one,” Kaplan said.

Despite Trump’s continuous accusations, Carroll says that she believes the lawsuit’s results will encourage other women who’ve experienced the same thing as her to speak out.

“I am overwhelmed, overwhelmed with joy and happiness, and delight for the women in this country,” Carroll said.
