DPHS varsity boys basketball defeats Rio Mesa

Dos Pueblos High School’s varsity boys basketball team defeated the Rio Mesa Spartans Tuesday night at home, with a final score of 67-53. Wyatt Gardiner (12) led DPHS with 31 points and 13 rebounds.

“We came out with a fast start and were able to execute on both ends of the court,” coach Joe Zamora said. “I felt we were very aggressive, and we played really good team defense.”

The Chargers started the first quarter by scoring 18 points, putting them ahead of the Spartans, who scored nine. DPHS’s momentum continued into the second quarter and went into halftime ahead 33-16. The Spartans “made a run” in the third and fourth quarters, but were unable to pull ahead, resulting in a win for the Chargers, who scored 20 points in the fourth quarter alone.

“Our guys responded and were able to execute and take care of the ball when they were trapping us,” Zamora said.

In addition to Gardiner, Logan Pearce (11) and Evan Pinsker (12) each added 11 points. Coulter Jay (12) contributed defensively.

The Chargers will travel down to Carpintería on Friday to compete in the Jim Bashore Classic tournament.

Leo Quinkert (12) spends his free time practicing architectural photography by taking photos of different buildings around Santa Barbara. “The camera is from the ‘50s, so the photos that you create with it have the look of an old photo, which looks nice for these old buildings,” Leo said. As a news editor for The Charger Account, he enjoys journalism because it allows him to take photos and interview students around campus. He is also a member of the Ethnic Studies Now! club, where he participates in forms of activism such as their recent walkout.

Madelynn Le (12), born and raised in Santa Barbara, enjoys spending time in the Ethnic Studies Now! club, in which she is the vice president. Madelynn also volunteers at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital on weekends, where she escorts and assists patients and visitors. “I think it’s nice to be able to meet people and try to brighten their day even with small acts,” Madelynn said. When she’s not making people smile, Madelynn likes to listen to punk music because of the inspiring messages it sends, as well as spending time with friends, and creating art. Alongside Features, oversees opinions, and for fun section.
