Dos Pueblos High School is home to several clubs on campus, one of them being the Creative Writing Club. Club President Anna Matthews (11) said the club has an environment that allows students to express their creativity freely through stories, poems, and group discussions. The club meets every Tuesday in H-6 during lunch.
Matthews said she first became interested in the club during her freshman year.
“My freshman year, I wanted to join the Creative Writing Club, but I wasn’t really sure how to do that,” Matthews said. “[During] my sophomore year, I came back, and one of my friends was like, ‘Let’s join the Creative Writing Club.’”
Matthews says someone doesn’t have to be “super great at writing” to join the club because it’s more focused on learning how to have fun while writing rather than developing skills.
Club member Aislinn Wilson (12) said that the club gives her motivation and inspiration to write more in her free time. Wilson said she also enjoys that the club has new activities taking place each week.
“Usually, the president comes up with interesting prompts,” Wilson said. “Then, we write about them, or we discuss our favorite novels.”
Club member Eliza Savage (11) said that the creative writing club is a great option for a place to go during lunch because the club’s environment is “kind” and “supportive.”
Savage said her favorite part of the Creative Writing Club is how each member shares similar interests, which she thinks leads club members to have a stronger bond with one another.
“It’s a really chill club,” Savage said. “We do an activity, and you can either participate or not, but it’s more fun if you participate. We play games and we hang out.”
Aside from writing-based games and book-led discussions, the Creative Writing Club also offers an environment where students can spend their lunches talking with one another.
“It’s a fun place for people who are interested in books and writing to come and just hang out with other people who share that kind of common interest,” Matthews said.
