The Mountain Fire in the Oxnard area has destroyed homes and land since it started on Nov. 6. The fire is 60 percent contained and has burned 20,630 acres as of 3 p.m. on. Nov. 13.
The fire started around 9 a.m. on Nov. 6 and crossed the California 118 freeway around 9:30 a.m. Oxnard and Camarillo are currently under evacuation orders.
A Dos Pueblos High School cross country meet was postponed on the day the fire started. Many cross country athletes and coaches who were going to attend the meet could no longer compete, since they or their family were under evacuation orders.
“There are multiple fires that are headed directly at our rival schools,” said DPHS Cross Country Coach David Jackson. “Rio Mesa, in particular, is located a very short distance, like, less than a mile from the fires.”
Due to the evacuation orders, some residents are displaced. According to the California Fire Department, the fire has damaged 90 homes, destroyed 207 homes, and injured six people.
“Out of compassion for our colleagues, I think that the right thing to do is to give everyone time to be with their family,” Jackson said.
The race was postponed until Friday and gave coaches time to make decisions about which athletes will be competing in CIF championships.
“We’re under a deadline to make sure that CIF understands who we’re sending to the CIF…and that’s due by Friday night,” Jackson said.
The athletes, who had been preparing for a race, had to adjust to this new development and work to stay competitive.
“We’re good at being flexible,” said Girl’s Cross Country co-Captain Quinn Gleason. “I think it’ll be okay… You never know with these races.”
The overall scores for the DPHS teams on Friday was third place for girls’ varsity and first place for boys‘ varsity. Cate Bishop, running for the girls’ varsity team, scored third place after two runners from Ventura High School. Boys’ varsity runner Eamon Gordon finished in first place, and Cullen Gully finished in second place.
