During the Dos Pueblos High School Homecoming football game, the Chargers faced a 0-33 loss against the Ventura Cougars on Friday. During the halftime show the homecoming court was introduced, the two winners were announced, and organizations on campus were recognized.
Players on the team contributed during different moments to further the effort by the Chargers. During the second quarter, quarterback Drew Schultz (11) added an 11-yard run and strong safety Rafael Perez (12) ended the game with 5 tackles, tk/loss 2, and 1 sac.
The halftime show honored the tradition of having the court drive around the track in vintage cars driven by DPHS alumni or teachers.
Students had the opportunity to cast two votes earlier on Friday for who they wanted to win homecoming court. The winners of the 2024/2025 homecoming court were Andrew Brennan (12) and Gus Miller (12)
Brennan had an “inkling” that he could win after the DPNews episode introducing the homecoming court aired.
“A bunch of freshmen and sophomore boys kept coming up to me and going, ‘Hey, you’re the Brawl Stars guy, I’m gonna vote for you.’ Which was really funny, because in my interview, I talked about enjoying the game and being good at Brawl Stars,” Brennan said. “So I had an inkling, because a lot of people kept coming up to me that I really didn’t know, but I definitely wasn’t sure. It was kind of a surprise still.”
When Brennan’s name was announced he was very “excited.”
“I definitely jumped a little,” Brennan said. “I got very excited. I hugged my mom. I went over and I dapped up Anna. I don’t know, it was a really good feeling, but there was a lot of stuff going on so it was just a lot of pressure in the moment. So I kind of blacked out a little. I don’t really know what happened.”
Being ASB President and “super involved” on campus Brennan felt good about the nomination and being recognized by his peers.
“So to get the nomination felt really good, because I was like, ‘Wow, my classmates recognized me,’ but then to get it from the whole school was like, I feel like I’m making, like, an impression on a lot of people, and that feels good,” said Brennan.
Miller was also feeling a mix of emotions before the announcement of Homecoming Royalty during the halftime show.
“Leading up to the homecoming game I was a mix of excited and nervous,” Miller said. “I kept telling my friends that being on the court was more nerve-racking than our semi-final CIF lacrosse game last season.”
Earlier in the day, Miller had felt more confident about winning but still didn’t expect it.
“I felt more confident than I had before because people had come up to me that day in school and told me they had voted for me,” Miller said. “But I definitely did not expect to win.”
After Miller’s name was announced to the crowd, everything was a “blur.”
“It’s so sick,” Miller said. “I get to brag to my kids when I’m older, and I love my crown already.”
