Tasked with planning a leadership project for Eagle Scouts and his love for literature, Andrew Golgert (11) recently organized a fundraiser for the Dos Pueblos High School library.
“I wanted to share what I like about reading with other people and give them more books to enjoy,” Golgert said. “I also found that in the library, there weren’t very many titles I wanted. I didn’t want people to have that same issue, where they couldn’t find titles they wanted.”
In starting the fundraiser, DPHS librarian Alexa Levesque provided Golgert with a list of books she wanted added to the school’s library. Levesque’s list included books spread across several genres to “ensure that there is something for every reader.”
Some of the books on the list include the “Harry Potter” series by J.K. Rowling, “Maus,” by Art Spiegelman, and select books from the “Hunger Games” series by Suzanne Collins.
“We can focus on titles that get checked out a lot because … oftentimes they get destroyed and damaged, and then we have to not put them into circulation anymore,” Levesque said.
Levesque is also planning to add additional copies of books like “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” by Jenny Han, the “Percy Jackson” series by Rick Riordan, The Manga “Death Note,” by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, and “Heartstopper” by Alice Osemam.
Golbert’s goal in this project is to allow all students who come to the library to find the books they would like to read.
“It will have a very positive effect …, it’ll just allow us to keep more books in circulation,” Levesque said. “Which will hopefully mean that more students will be able to come in and check out a book instead of getting here and finding out the book they want isn’t available and then having to go back empty-handed.”
Golgert said he wants to raise enough money for 100 hardcover books for the DPHS library .
“So, we’re hoping that not just students, but even if families want to donate, that they can probably donate about $30 more or less,” Golgert said. “Any donation really does help.”
Donations can be made at Golbert’s fundraising page.
