Dos Pueblos High School Principal Bill Woodard announced that the student section was one of the “largest” DPHS ever had at the first league home football game against the Santa Ynez Pirates on August 22, at 7 p.m..
DPHS Freshman, who wore their gold t-shirts got into the game for free. Many other students participated in the gold theme.
In the first half of the game Santa Ynez was up with a 31-0 lead, however with a couple minutes remaining in the second quarter Finn McWeeney (12) had an interception that got the Chargers close to the Pirate’s end zone. That led Diego Chamu (12) to get a 4-yard rushing touchdown to end the first half with a score of 31-7.
In the third quarter the Pirates scored a touchdown with 29 seconds left and ended the third quarter with a score of 37-7. In the fourth quarter, Seth Orozco (10) scored a 37-yard field goal and Micah Barnhart (12) got through the defense making a 2-yard rushing touchdown, cutting the deficit to 37-16.
In the final three minutes of the game both teams scored, with the Pirates scoring first with a 25-yard touchdown. Later, DPHS Quarterback Grady Felix (10) connected with Soren Smedley (11) to score a 20-yard touchdown pass. The Chargers touchdown ended the game with a 43-22, a loss for DPHS.
The next game for the Chargers is at home on Friday, August 29, at 7 p.m. against Royal High School.
