Dos Pueblos High School Theater Company has returned for the annual musical. This year’s production is “Mamma Mia,” a Tony Award winner for Best Musical.
“‘Mamma Mia’ is one of the most aesthetic musicals,” Sophia Abbott (12) said. “I’m excited to see that the ‘Mamma Mia’ musical is going to be performed at our school. It’s going to be really fun to watch live.”
“Mamma Mia” has been performed by different schools and organizations.
“It’s really interesting to see how different people interpret the production, like the costumes, and scenery, and everything,” Abbott said.
From the inside, the cast and crew have different perspectives and expectations. Nicola Bailey (11) plays Sophie Sheridan, one of the leads in “Mamma Mia.” She expressed that this version will be different because of “the characters you’re going to see.”
“Every single person brings a different aspect to every character to make them unique and human, and I think that’s so interesting and so great and so important for a show like this,” Bailey said.
Building on the development of different characters, the production also focuses on exploring the relationships in the show.
“I think that a critique of ‘Mamma Mia’ could be that it can be seen as lacking in substance — there’s flashing numbers and dancing and singing,” Andrew Cooper (10) said. “I think something that we do really differently is that we balance that with a lot of depth and a lot of contrast … It’s a show about relationships, and I think any kind of relationship has those really high highs and also has more dramatic lows … Our production really brings that out and makes those relationships shine.”
In addition to the actors, the crew has contributed to the “Mamma Mia” space.
“Building the set for ‘Mamma Mia’ has been one of the most exciting projects we’ve worked on,” Cam Middleton (12) said. “We really tried to capture the bright, summery feel of a Greek island, but still make it flexible enough for all the scene changes.”
Middleton explained that the set design aims to immerse the audience from the moment they walk in.
“There’s so much attention to detail this year, from the color palettes to the props, and I think people are going to be really impressed when they see it all come together,” Middleton said.
According to Bailey and Cooper, “Voulez-Vous” and “Gimme, Gimme, Gimme” will be the most “exciting” numbers.

How does one buy a ticket? Are there any accomodations for the hard of hearing? Are seats assigned or come as you will?
