This is Alexa Levesque’s first year teaching at Dos Pueblos High School. Levesque teaches English 9 Ethnic Studies as well as Government and Economics. She previously taught at Lompoc Valley Middle School and La Cumbre Junior High.
“While I enjoyed working at the junior high level, I always wanted to teach high school, and so, when there was a position open, I was really excited to get the opportunity to try out a higher [grade] level,” Levesque said. “I also know how great a community DP has; I’ve heard from a lot of different teachers and how much they’ve enjoyed working at DP.”
Levesque first got her teaching credential in English and later received one in Social Studies.
“I always felt like the two subjects are pretty similar,” Levesque said. “Taking English skills and applying them to look at the past, and so it just seemed natural to have both.”
Outside of school, Levesque enjoys reading, writing, and traveling. Her favorite book is “The Golden Compass” by Philip Pullman, and she is also a part of a writing group.
“I love to read; I know that’s very cliche for an English teacher, but that’s one of my favorite things to do,” Levesque said. “I am part of a writing group that meets every couple of weeks and shares what we’ve written to kind of encourage each other to keep going.”
Over winter break, Levesque traveled to the Lapland region of Finland, which is above the Arctic Circle.
“We got to see the Northern Lights, which was a bucket list item for sure,” Levesque said.
Levesque said she enjoys the creativity that comes with teaching as well as seeing different student’s perspectives.
“I like that [teaching] can look different every day,” Levesque said. “Every student is unique and they have a different perspective in the world, and I love getting to hear that and being surprised by people every day.”
