Summer 2024 saw some new movie releases, political events, and the Olympics.

New Movie Releases
Over the summer there were a few new movie releases which included “Inside Out 2” and the “Deadpool & Wolverine” movie. These two movie releases reached high box office success, with “Inside Out 2” being the current highest grossing movie of 2024 followed by “Deadpool & Wolverine” as the second.

On June 14, “Inside Out 2” was released as the sequel to “Inside Out” which was released in 2015. “Inside Out 2” is currently the highest grossing movie in 2024 with an international box office of $1.650 billion.

The “Deadpool & Wolverine” movie was released on July 26. The movie stars Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool. The movie had an international box office of over $1.029 billion.

Donald Trump assasination attempt
On July 13th, Donald Trump was speaking at a rally in Butler, PA when 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks fired shots from an AR-style rifle from the rooftop of a nearby building. Trump was shot and wounded in his upper right ear. One audience member was also killed and two others were critically injured. Crooks was subsequently shot and killed by the United States Secret Service’s Counter Sniper Team.

Joe Biden steps down from the election and endorses Kamala Harris
On July 21, current president of the United States, Joe Biden, said that he would not be running for re-election and endorsed Kamala Harris, the current vice president of the United States.

Kamala Harris was selected to be the official Democratic nominee at the Democratic National Convention which was held from Aug. 19 to 22.

The Olympics
Over the summer, the 2024 Summer Olympics were held in Paris, France. The Olympics were held from July 26 to Aug. 11 with 206 national Olympics committees and the refugee team. The summer Olympics feature 32 sports and is considered the world’s foremost sporting event.

From Dos Pueblos High School, there were a number of athletes that competed in the olympics. These athletes were indoor volleyball player Doug Partie, water polo players Christopher Segesmen, Sami Hill, Kiley Neushul, Jamie Neushul, and Ryann Neushul, as well as Nicolas Scarvelis and Stamatia Scarvelis both competing in track and field.

Overall the United States took home 126 total medals, one of them being the women’s gymnastics team’s gold medal in the team all-around final.

“I watched women’s gymnastics,” Mylee Ortiz (10) said. “They were really good.”
