The Dos Pueblos Theater Company’s spring musical “Anything Goes” opens on May 9 and will be showing until May 18.
This musical features music and lyrics written by Cole Porter and follows a series of plotlines that unfold on a luxury cruise liner, the “S.S. American,” which is sailing from New York to London.
“It follows our leads, Reno Sweeney, who is a nightclub jazz singer, and her very good friend, Billy Crocker, who sneaks aboard the ship to follow a woman he’s in love with, who is betrothed to another who’s also aboard the ship,” said DP Theater Director Emily Libera. “Then we have Moonface Martin and Irma Latour, who are sneaking aboard the ship as well. He’s undercover as a minister, but really, he’s a famous gangster … there’s a lot of plotlines that kind of start colliding and coinciding.”
The leads of this musical are Mary Bailey (12), who plays Reno Sweeny, Biz Fletcher (11), who plays Hope Harcourt, Matthew Weitzel (12), who plays Billy Crocker, Andrew Diffenderfer (11), who plays Lord Evelyn Oakleigh, Adora Bricher (11), who plays Irma Latour, and Andrew Cooper (9), who plays Moonface Martin.
“Anything Goes” contains many dance scenes and features a variety of different dance styles, including tap, ballroom dancing, and paso doble.
“The actors have been challenged because this is a very incredibly difficult dance show,” Libera said. “These students have been working incredibly hard for months, so now it’s really cool to be able to sit back and watch them just totally celebrate themselves with these incredible dance numbers.”
